Dear Parents and Students, Each week your child will have a variety of homework assignments, which support the learning of our fifth grade curriculum. Our expectation is that students are engaged in reading a minimum of 100 minutes a week from a variety of genres. You can expect math homework several days a week, which will reinforce math concepts covered in class. There will be occasional homework in science and social studies, plus occasional reports or projects. Studying for quizzes and tests will also be needed. Fifth graders should spend about 45 minutes to an hour per day on these activities.
Our homework policy: 1. Do your homework! or… 2. Bring a note from home the day it is due, with a reasonable explanation of why homework could not be completed or…
3. A warning slip will be sent home to be signed by the parent/guardian, and your child will need to complete the missed assignment to be handed in the next day. Each child will be given one written warning or "Oops" for each subject if he/she does not complete an assignment. 4. The second time your child does not have his/her homework for the one subject, your child will be asked to stay for a lunch detention that week to make up the missed assignment. You will receive a slip informing you of the missed assignment and detention. Please know your child will attend recess. 5. After the third lunch detention, your child will be asked to serve an after school detention to make up the missed assignment. You will be notified in writing of the after school detention/date for your signature. If the problem continues, your child will be referred to the guidance counselor and/or the dean for further assistance and support with his/her homework responsibility.
